Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed (a.k.a. Irish Hound)

The Irish Wolfhound or Irish Hound is an ancient breed that Irish Celts used a long time for hunting purposes and that Teutonic literature was frequently object of worship due to its courage, a great outstanding quality. When its traditional preys were disappearing from the island, the work ended for this breed, and at that point it risked of becoming extinct. It was saved thanks to the exclusive efforts made by some enthusiastic breeders.

The Irish hound is the largest breed in the world – an adult dog needs a height at withers from 81 to 86 cm. – Given to its great sized, its impressive mass, and its rough greyish coat, it may be stated that this hound has everything necessary to make of it an ideal guard dog, able to inspire fear. However, its threatening presence is softened by the sweet look of its dark eyes, and its affectionate and nice attitude. The Irish Hound, as a house and company dog, it is docile and obedient and, due in part for these attributes, it needs less space than anyone can imagine.

The Irish Hound needs to be muscled and also, despite its build, elegant. The coat must be though and especially long on the head. The color is commonly of grey shades, but it can be black, white, beige, red, or multicolored. Its height at withers is 79 cm long for male dogs, and 71 for female dogs.
