Bullmastiff Breed Origins and Caracteristics
This breed was born in England at the end of the past century by cross-breeding the mastiff and the bulldog. In its origins, thesewere used as forest guards and watchers to protect in the night rounds and against poachers. The extraordinary qualities of the bullmastiff were used by the police in 1924 the National Bullmastiff Police Club, established a first standard of the breed.
The complexion of the bullmastiff is massive, though elegant. This animal shows strength and calm. The big and angular head has powerful jaws and a big and square snout that may not measure more than eight or nine centimeters. Unlike the mastiff, it has a flat forehead and a moderate stop. The relatively small and V-shaped ears are located at both sides of the head in the shape of half conch and they are slightly separated.
A bullmastiff is a dangerous adversary, but deep inside it is a cheerful, confident, loyal, brave, very obedient dog with a good character. Among its merits, its excellent correlation with children should be highlighted. It is more agile than the mastiff and it is more easily to dominate. The bullmastiff resists well outside temperature and its straight hair does not require any particular care. It is enough to groom it with a medium-hard groomer and then use again a softer groomer to eliminate all dirtiness that may have stayed in the fur. If you rub it with a chamois cloth or with a piece of flannel, the skin keeps bright.
Size: male 67-70 cm, female 65-68 cm. Weight: male 60 kg, female 54 kg. The standard authorizes all the tonalities of yellow or straw-color (1). The ears, nose and snout of the face must be black. For breeding thewith a black mask are preferred. The dark brown or brown eyes must be marked in shadowed zones; the skin between the eyes makes accentuated folds (2).
At first sight the bullmastiff can be confused with a mastiff. Please note that in the bullmastiff the skin is less wrinkled on the head and on the face and the nose bridge is longer. The belfs are less heavy. The shape of the body is shorter and the tail is kept higher, as well as the ears.
