Compared to the human skin, although in both cases there are three layers (epidermis, dermis and hypodermis), in the level of epidermis there are significant differences between a dog's skin and a human's skin. In the canine skin there are about 3 to 5 cellular layers and their capacity of renewal is about 20 days whereas in a human's epidermis there are approximately 10 to 15cellular layers and their renewal takes about 28 days.

95% of is covered by hair and this grows in a cyclical manner. Only 5% of a human's skin is covered by hair is continuous. This cyclical growth of hair dogs mean there are two changes per year (spring and fall), although in some domestic dogs you will observe continuous change.

In dogs, and the sweat glands don't have a function that regulates the body temperature like the human body does. The elimination of heat is basically done by breathing (panting).
