Dog can't stand or walk

Postby Delilah » Tue Feb 13, 2007 2:44 am

In the past week or so, my dog has gotten steadily weaker. He spent the weekend in the hospital on IV fluids and today the vet told me he could go home that he was on the road to recovery. He walked on a leash, partly sideways, to the car peeing on his feet on the way. He stopped, but he couldn't lift his leg. He collapsed in the car and I held him all the way home. I took him to the back yard and put him in the grass and he walked a couple of steps and fell over. He did this over and over and couldn't get up. I called the vet and told her and she said that he would get better and that it would take some time and there was nothing they were doing for him in the hospital that we can't do at home. He's lying like a lump of dead fish right now. I just hand fed him while he lay down and I fed him water with a syringe. He is a miniature schnauzer/jack russell mix, 10 1/2 years old, and weighs about 16 pounds. He has never been sick a day in his life. They thought at first that he and his sister (who's been sick, too, but is getting around a lot better) had gotten into some toxin that was causing the problem. We've walked every inch of the yard and house and have found nothing that hasn't always been here. The vet along with the other four vets at the clinic and two specialists that they have been in touch with are basically at a loss and are hoping that he will just get better. He was sent home with antibiotics to take, but that's pretty much it.

Have any of you ever heard of anything like this and if so, what was it and how was it treated. I know this list is not professionals, but we are looking for any idea of what might be wrong.

Thanks

Did they do X-rays of his spine & head? I presume they did a whole blood panel?

Was the sister taken to the same vet? If not, what was she diagnosed to have?

Is there a teaching hospital near by that you could take him to?

Did they do X-rays of his spine & head?
No. They x-rayed his sister when we first took her and found arthritis in the spine. But, I think they are assuming that they have the same thing and I don't think they do. The girl had been getting more feable for weeks. My boy was still jumping up on the bed three days before he was totally unable to get up, stand or walk.

I presume they did a whole blood panel?
They did. His tests were are fine. I don't think they did any testing for specific toxins, though. His problem seems to be neurological, where his sister's seems to be more arthritic, etc.

Was the sister taken to the same vet?
Yes. At first they were thinking cancer for the girl since they were baffled by her symptoms. They sent some blood off yesterday to test for cancer. I should have the results today or tomorrow. She had a fever, he never did. She quit eating and drinking except what I hand fed her. He has maintained an appetite. It's all very frustrating.

If not, what was she diagnosed to have?
The girl has arthritis and evidently had some kind of a virus. Her fever is gone and she is getting around well. She's perky again and doesn't seem sick at all.

Is there a teaching hospital near by that you could take him to?
No. I'm in Memphis, TN. the closest I can find is at UT Knoxville. It's about 6 hours away. I work at the University of Memphis and there is a vet down the hall who is in charge of research animals on campus. I have a call in to her this morning and am hoping she can spend a little time with me and give me some guidance. Maybe we need a second opinion. Maybe I need to drive him to Knoxville.

He slept all night in the same position and has urinated on his bed twice. I take him outside and try to stand him up and encourage him to go potty, but of course he doesn't while I'm holding him and he can't stand up by himself. His front feet just fold up under him.

I am really concerned for him. If he can't move around, it probably won't be long before he develops pneumonia. I appreciate your helping me think about this.

it sounds like to me that he has a slipped disk or something of that nature. Just my thoughts anyway. Good luck and keep us posted.

As you mentioned, I don't think the vet along with the other four vets and two specialists have been checked your dog without taking X-rays of his spine & head.
Even thought, I suggest to take him other hospital and also teaching or training hospitals.
