Dog Nails Growing out of Tail and Neck!!!

Postby shannon1233 » Tue Oct 10, 2006 1:56 am

I really hope someone here can help me, as my 2 vets can't answer some questions. My 10 year old German Shepherd, just in the last 3 months has been growing NAILS on the underside of her tail and now on her nectk They are not painful amd she's generally in good health otherwise.

The vets cut them(the ones on the tail and neck), at the same time her toe nails are done. There is no quik or nerve endings as there's no pain involved. They keep growing back.

Has anyone here ever heard of this, and do you have a technical name for what's happening? It's freaking me out! THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INFO YOU CAN PROVIDE.

Wow this sounds bizarre! You don't live near a factory or chemical plant of some sort do you? Very strange...

I've heard of this before, I'm just not sure where. Must have been many years ago since I last heard of a case like this. You want to see even a more bizarre case with humans, the link is below.
Look at the background picture here
The fibers which grow from morgellons is colored with colors not even on the outside of the human body :/
I found the disease fascinating. Which is why I keep an open mind, and doctors do not know everything. Most just know text book cases. Sad.

Sorry, I didn't get back right away. Someone from another board has the same thing happening with her collie. She sent me a pic, so I'll post that as shannons were just cut so they don't show up well. Her vet said it's a genetic abnormality that sometimes happens, nothing to worry about. Hope this pic works, I've been having trouble posting!

That is really weird!!!!!! Ya, I agree with Uptowndogs, you dont live near a power plant or anything, do you? That could be an explination. Or was it possible that she was exposed to some kind of household chemical, like paint or some kind of cleaner?

Dog Nails Growing out of Tail and Neck!!!

Postby shannon1233 » Sun Oct 15, 2006 12:58 am

Nope, neither of us live near anything like that. As the vet said it's a genrtic mutation which may present itself during the dogs life, or maybe not. It's nothing to worry about thank Goodness, not cancerous etc. Just clip them as you would do the toe nails! I hope this post and experience will help some other poster who experience this rare abnormality, and saves them many sleepness nights and worry as it did me! It sure is a strange thing to see and experience, but please know it's not dangerous, cancerous, just a pain in the butt to keep an eye on and to have them clipped at the same time as their toe nails. The good side is also there's no quik so it's not painfull to cut these nails from anybody part so no chance of pain in cutting too short!

Edited to add: it is kind of freaky though to find toe nails growing on your dogs tail and neck!

are you really sure you dont live near a power plant or the dog was not born near one. At anyrate that looks more like something they call unicorn tag. its not actually a nail. its a growth and it can be removed rather easily.
