A living relic, the San Huberto or Bloodhound is unbeatable due to its nobility and sense of smell.

King of the canine sense of smell: the Bloodhound Dog.
The solemn Bloodhound or San Huberto dog, is one of the heaviest large dogs, the males can weigh 55 kg and the females 50 kg (although the average is about 10 kg less). The noble breed’s head is noticeable, which is narrow in proportion to its length and long for the body. The occipital protuberance is extremely developed. The eyes are deeply sunken. The ears, soft to the touch and fine, long enough, with creases and low inserted.  The skin falls especially over the forehead and sides of the head. The neck is long so the dog can follow the trail with the nose on the ground without slowing down; the chest, well let down to form a deep keel; the forelegs, straight and strong boned; the hind legs, well angled and the hocks, low. The lumbar area is slightly arched and deep, and the back, strong. The Bloodhound’s color can be black and tan, unicolor and tan, and brown and tan (the first color is the most sought). Small patches are admitted in the chest and legs. The average height to the withers in males is between 63 and 69 cm and for females between 58 and 63 cm. A large animal is preferred, as long as it keeps its quality and balance.
WHO IS the Bloodhound Dog for
Wrinkles predominate from the beginning.
Famous for its sense of smell, the Bloodhound is the best tracker, and probably the most peaceful of all dogs. It is determined and tireless. As most hound breeds, the Bloodhound loves people, especially fun loving people. It is calm at home, although it can often be loud outdoors, using its howl. The owner should have a large estate, since for a Bloodhound a yard would be too small. It is essential that it is fenced, since the Bloodhound would go after a trail faster than the wind. It is said that its sense of smell is two million times more sensitive than human. Despite its size, it is not a guard dog, and it never attacks. One of the kindest and most patient breeds in the canine world, this dog is deeper than quick in thought, similar to occidental ideology architect.
DEVELOPMENT  of a Bloodhound Dog
The puppy Bloodhound grows quickly, but doesn’t reach maturity until after two or three years.

The size of the litters varies enormously in the Bloodhound, since a few to 15 puppies. Obviously, the puppy sizes also vary, and in larger litters the puppies are born smaller. With a good diet and supplementary food, the smallest puppies reach the same size as the larger. Upon birth, the Bloodhound puppy is almost completely black or red, changing to black and tan or darker red when growing. The Bloodhound grows quickly, and should receive food prescribed by the breeder. During adolescence it can become delicate when eating, and we should watch that tendency mostly during the phases with more growth, when an adequate nutrition is vital to avoid growth problems. The Bloodhound does not reach physical maturity until after two years, the males even later. The female can take up to one year to have its first heat, or more. It has a scissor bite.
Bloodhound Dog HEALTH
In general, the Bloodhound is an easy to care for partner. It has a sweet and balanced character, and its requirements as far as exercise can be satisfied with long pleasant walks. It is a breed relatively free of serious hereditary and congenital problems, although cases of hip and elbow dysplasia cases are reported. Most common eyes concern the eyes (ectropion and dry conjunctivitis); first, normally due to lower eyelid drooping and filth accumulation, which can bring complications. The long dropping ears can be prone to ear infections. Always control skin creases for possible rashes. It is known that the Bloodhound can suffer skin torsions, for which two smaller meals per day, abundant water, and make it exercise moderately but regularly. Finally, bone complications are reported, which you should check with your veterinarian during the entire growth period.
The Bloodhound’s eyes and ears require regular attention to keep them clean and without a problem.
